A Buchholz Relay is a gas-actuated protection device used in oil-immersed transformers equipped with a conservator tank. It detects internal faults such as insulation breakdown, short circuits, overheating of windings, core faults and oil leakage.
It acts as an early warning system and protects expensive transformer equipment from catastrophic failure.
 
Working Principle of Transformer Buchholz Relay
The Buchholz Relay works on two fault detection mechanisms:
1. Gas Accumulation (Minor Faults)
When minor internal faults occur, gases are generated inside the transformer tank. These gases accumulate in the relay chamber, causing the oil level to drop. The upper float moves downward and activates the alarm contact.
This gives an early warning signal for inspection and preventive maintenance.
2. Oil Surge (Major Faults)
 
In case of serious internal faults such as short circuits, a rapid oil surge flows toward the conservator tank. This activates the lower float or flap mechanism, which triggers the trip contact and disconnects the transformer from the power system.
This dual-stage protection ensures transformer safety and reliability.
