Oil and Winding Temperature Indicator for Transformer (OTI WTI)

The Oil and Winding Temperature Indicator (OTI & WTI) is an essential monitoring device used in oil-filled power transformers to measure and display the temperature of transformer oil and windings. Accurate temperature monitoring is critical for ensuring the safe operation, reliability, and long service life of transformers used in electrical substations, industrial power systems, and utility distribution networks.

Transformers operate continuously under varying load conditions. As electrical current flows through the windings, heat is generated inside the transformer. The insulating oil absorbs and transfers this heat away from the core and winding assembly. If the temperature rises beyond safe limits, it can lead to insulation deterioration, reduced transformer efficiency, and possible equipment failure. Oil and Winding Temperature Indicators are therefore installed to monitor temperature conditions and protect transformers from overheating.

By providing clear temperature indication along with alarm and trip contacts, these instruments help operators monitor transformer health and take preventive action before serious damage occurs.

Oil Temperature Indicator (OTI)

The Oil Temperature Indicator (OTI) is used to measure the top oil temperature inside the transformer tank. The temperature of the insulating oil provides a reliable indication of the overall thermal condition of the transformer because the oil carries heat generated by the transformer core and windings.

The OTI typically consists of a temperature sensing bulb connected to a capillary tube filled with liquid. When the oil temperature changes, the liquid expands or contracts, causing the pointer on the dial to move and display the temperature reading. Most Oil Temperature Indicators also include adjustable alarm and trip contacts that activate cooling systems or protective relays when the temperature exceeds preset limits.

Winding Temperature Indicator (WTI)

The Winding Temperature Indicator (WTI) is designed to measure the simulated temperature of transformer windings. Since windings generate the highest heat within a transformer, monitoring their temperature is extremely important for preventing insulation damage and maintaining safe operation.

The WTI works by combining oil temperature sensing with a heating element connected to the transformer current transformer (CT). The heater simulates the heating effect caused by load current flowing through the windings. This allows the instrument to represent the actual winding temperature more accurately under different load conditions.

WTI instruments also include alarm and trip contacts that can trigger cooling fans, pumps, or protective systems when winding temperature reaches critical levels.

Key Features of Oil & Winding Temperature Indicators

• Accurate and reliable temperature measurement
• Dial type temperature display for easy monitoring
• Separate monitoring of oil and winding temperature
• Adjustable alarm and trip contacts for protection
• Capillary tube sensing system for precise operation
• Rugged and weather-resistant construction
• Suitable for outdoor transformer installation
• Long service life with minimal maintenance
• Compatible with power and distribution transformers

These features make Oil and Winding Temperature Indicators an essential part of transformer protection and monitoring systems.

Applications

Oil and Winding Temperature Indicators are widely used in various electrical installations where transformers are installed. Common applications include:

Electrical Substations
Used for monitoring the operating temperature of power transformers.

Power Generation Plants
Ensures safe transformer operation in thermal, hydro, and renewable power plants.

Industrial Power Systems
Used in factories and large industrial facilities to monitor transformer temperature conditions.

Utility Power Distribution Networks
Helps maintain reliable power supply and protect distribution transformers.

Renewable Energy Projects
Installed in transformers used in solar and wind power installations.

Importance in Transformer Protection

Temperature is one of the most important parameters affecting transformer life. Excessive temperature can accelerate insulation aging and reduce transformer reliability. Oil and Winding Temperature Indicators provide continuous monitoring and early warning of abnormal conditions.

By detecting temperature rise at an early stage, these instruments allow operators to take corrective actions such as activating cooling systems or reducing load. This helps prevent transformer damage, improves operational safety, and extends the service life of electrical equipment.

Reliable Monitoring for Modern Power Systems

In modern electrical infrastructure, reliable transformer monitoring is essential for maintaining uninterrupted power supply. The Oil and Winding Temperature Indicator (OTI & WTI) provides accurate temperature measurement and protection, making it a vital instrument for transformers used in substations, power plants, and industrial electrical systems.

With robust construction, precise temperature indication, and integrated protection features, OTI and WTI devices help ensure safe, efficient, and long-term operation of power transformers.
