The Pressure Relief Device (PRD) for Transformer is a safety component used in oil-immersed transformers to provide protection against sudden and abnormal pressure buildup inside the transformer tank. Internal faults, electrical arcing, excessive heating, or rapid decomposition of transformer oil can generate gases and increase tank pressure. A PRD is designed to respond to such pressure conditions and provide a rapid outlet for relieving the accumulated pressure.
The device is normally fitted directly to the transformer tank or cover using a suitable mounting arrangement. During regular transformer operation, the PRD remains in its closed position and maintains the required sealing. When internal pressure rises above the preset operating value, the pressure-sensitive mechanism responds and opens the relief passage. This allows the excess pressure to escape, helping reduce mechanical stress on the tank and associated components.
